Back home in Quebec, we have this little thing we call the Construction Holiday, "Les vacances de la construction". See, even on the website they have to use quotes, as if they can't say it with a straight face. I seem to recall it being referred to as "la fete de la contruction", which is a lot more fun, evoking images of parades and parties and lots of beer being consumed, confirming that charming stereotype of the quebecois as a fun-loving, jolly people who work to live and know how to have a good time, tabernac. It's also known as "shut down", and it happens in the last two weeks of July. I worked in manufacturing for three summers and shut down was always a peaceful, quiet time, a two-week period when you didn't have to wait in line for 20 minutes in the cafeteria for Wednesday's pizza special, a time when your supervisor took off to Old Orchard or Shediac or Daytona Beach and you could hide in the stacks of the Filling Department with your latest multigenerational family saga. Not that I ever did that - no, I just hid the book in my lap under my desk.

I'm looking forward to my holiday, which should happen in about a month. I don't know how much "down time" I will end up taking ("down time" - so much nicer than "unemployed" and even "between jobs at the moment"). But I plan to spend it reading and rebuilding my website and experimenting with my cameras and canoeing and swimming and camping. If my down time finds me snowshoeing and iceskating, however, I will know it has gone on too long.

The other night, my neighbour across the hall heard me talking to the cats. I'm sure she heard me clear as a bell because I heard her unlock her front door and it was so loud, I thought she was coming into my apartment. I was saying, in a high-pitched syrupy tone, "Who's being wicked? Who's wicked? There's great wickedness afoot here! Oooooh, wicked! Such wickedness!"

It's almost as bad as this daily "exchange" between me and a certain grey-striped cat, delivered in a normal tone of voice: "Harry, get out of the closet. You don't belong in the closet. Stop playing with Mummy's shoes. Harry - leave those shoes alone. Get out of the closet. Out of the closet! Out!"

Thirty ain't what it used to be. Nor is forty. Or sixty for that matter. I spent some time on Friday afternoon with financial planners shifting money around so I can retire some day. "In 30 years," said Financial Planner No. 2. I said, "In thirty years I'll only [only!] be 61." "You're right," he said. "Better to retire at 55."

As. If. But anyway. If he can make it happen for me, I'll name my first child after him. A child I may not have until I'm 40, but hey, that's OK, because everybody's doing it. Unheard of 25 years ago - Toronto Life had a cover story in about 1980 or 1981 about these crazy career women who were having children after age 30. Shock! Horror! Think of the children! Now people look at you funny if you have a kid before you're 30.

Anyway. So now I'm officially "in" my thirties. To celebrate, Phil took me out for steak frites at a brasserie in Yorkville. The meal was delightful but the experience was marred by the shenanigans of one of the waiters, who basically auditioned at every table he waited on (fortunately, not ours). Everybody who wanted to order dessert was treated to a breathless tale of how tarte tatin (which he kept pronouncing "taRtin") came to be. I'm surprised he didn't do "jazz hands" at the end of this recitation, or break into heartfelt song about how the tarte tartin will go on. By the end of the meal, I wanted to tarte tatin his face.

I grow increasingly crotchety in my advancing years.
